Close Up interview with photographer Wendy Leung

by artshineon 7 November 2018in Interviews, News, Photographer

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.

I like to create art using my camera, I especially enjoy shooting flowers and abstract.  I grew up in Hong Kong and moved to Australia and New Zealand in my teenage years. I also work as an early childhood teacher, an industry I bumped into after 3 babies came to my life.

Where do you get your inspiration from when you create your art?

I like to take a walk in botanic gardens or in the bush or forest, the textures, pattern, fragrance, shapes and colours of the flowers inspires me.  I also get inspirations from music, I listen to different kinds of music, to name a few: acid jazz, jazz vocal, hip hop, pop and Cantonpop.

What are the five words that people who know you would use to describe you?

Optimistic, learner, tough, flexible, compassionate

Tell us about your very first job and what path have you taken since then?

While waiting for my graduation, I got a job selling educational toys door to door, I got into sales to overcome my shyness, and later have different jobs in the finance industry. I picked up the camera again after having my children, it’s when I find ‘me’ again.

How do you usually plan your daily activities?

I have a rough schedule, with three children, a family and a job, the day goes smoother with a plan.

As an artist, what is your biggest frustration?

Finding quality time to create art and all the other pieces, like marketing, promotion…etc.

How do you connect with other artists, and your customers (i.e. how do you network)?

I’m new to the artist community, I usually connect with other artists through instagram, and when time permits, joining a local art group or photographic shoot out.

Orange Pop

Your advice to an artist who is just starting out?

Get a mentor, focus on your art and outsource jobs that consume too much time and energy.

How did you find out about ArtSHINE?

It was actually quite interesting, I was looking for accommodations for my parents on AirBnB and got attracted by the photo of Vinh’s bookshelf!  I clicked in to have a look at the decor and found ArtSHINE!

What is your proudest moment so far?

Spending time with my 3 lovely children.

Fireworks

What is the most important lesson in life that you have learned?

After a near death experience,I learned not to take anything for granted.  Every day alive and being able to enjoy the things around me is a bonus.
