Revered by ancient mesoamerican cultures as a living symbol of freedom and light, the quetzal was considered so sacred that it was never caged. The birds vibrant feathers were once more expensive than gold. It was considered a grave crime to kill one. Furthermore, the belief was that a quetzal cannot survive in captivity, dying of a broken heart if caged. This painting serves as a reflect of heart truly wants which is to remain free.
