Calligraphy Couplet - 对联 · - Mao Qiao Wen

開張天岸馬
奇逸人中龍

Unrestrained as a horse at the edge of the sky;
Extraordinary as a dragon among people.

The couplet praises a spirit of freedom and exceptional talent. Its broad, weighty strokes recall Han dynasty stele inscriptions, while the movement of the brush gives each character a lively presence. Look at the space around the five characters on each scroll: it lets the two bold lines stand together as a pair.
