Nians are Mythical Chinese monsters who rise out of the sea and hunt children in villages just before the Lunar New Year.

Red things such as lanterns, banners and noisy firecrackers are employed to keep them away (they are afraid of red), and this is where the tradition of Red in CNY celebrations originated.
