  • Artist’s Statement

"Handmade animal and human figurines, made from clay, have been with us since as early as 24,000 BC. From the earliest times, we have been making things out of readily available mud. It feels good to work and can be fired in an open fire. It is the simplicity and raw nature of clay that attracts me to this medium.

The pieces on display are all individually hand-rolled earthenware clay pieces and are glazed and kiln-fired to over 1,000 degrees celsius at my home studio in Kingsford, NSW.

Great stories like Australia’s Ned Kelly story, the legendary ANZACs, the pearl divers from the north-west of Australia and Australia’s iconic animals lure me in with their dramatic nature. Further afield, the Terracotta Army and its narrative have inspired the Qin Dynasty pieces."~ Mick Guthrie
